What the heck is a loon?

Minnesota's state bird, the common loon is a classic bird of the North Woods lakes and is more at home in the water than on land. Common Loons are powerful, agile divers that catch small fish in fast underwater chases. They are less suited to land, and typically come ashore only to nest. They can be very vocally active with nocturnal choruses, to hear the echoes of loon wails and yodels are a true Minnesotan treat.  (source: MN Department of Natural Resources)
